The brief

A talk series lives and dies by its dates: anyone landing on the site needs to see within three seconds when the next event is, where it takes place and how not to forget it. And the organisers are researchers, not web editors: the calendar couldn’t depend on someone remembering to update it after every event.

Bilingual website for Cheers to Science, a science outreach initiative born in the Department of Life Sciences at the University of Trieste and run by PhD students and early-career researchers. Short, accessible talks followed by a drink together: the site presents the next event, the full calendar, past events with photos, reels and the contacts for proposing a talk or collaborating.

What I did

A beer, a date, one tap to save it.

When the site opens, three hand-drawn beer mugs clink and make way for the next event, set inside a pink stamp with the date, time, speaker and lecture hall, and an “Add to calendar” button. Below, a calendar of tear-off tickets lists the upcoming talks, each with its own button to save it to your calendar. Once an event has taken place, it moves by itself to past events, with a link to the photos: nobody has to remember to update the site. A contact button that is always within reach opens three ready-made emails: propose a talk, collaborate or ask for information.

In detail

The choices that
make the difference.

The details designed for visitors to the Cheers to Science website.

01

A calendar that updates itself

Every event has an end time: once it has passed, the event leaves the calendar and appears among past events with a link to the photos, while the next one takes its place at the top. The organisers only add each date once.

02

Dates go straight into visitors’ calendars

“Add to calendar” downloads the event with its date, time and lecture hall, ready to open in the calendar app on a phone or computer (Apple, Google, Outlook). Nobody has to copy anything by hand.

03

Proposals that arrive complete

The contact button opens three ready-made emails, for proposing a talk, collaborating or asking for information, each with a subject line and a short outline to fill in: name, role or affiliation, title and topic of the talk.

04

An identity that makes you thirsty for science

Bottle green and pink, hand-drawn lettering, beer mugs holding a brain, DNA and a leaf, rising bubbles, tear-off tickets and polaroid-style photos: the site has the same light-hearted tone as the events themselves.

05

Two languages, one audience

Research is international, and so is the audience: the whole site, from the calendar to the contacts, is available in Italian and English, with the language switch always at the top.

06

Analytics only with consent

The “A toast to cookies?” banner appears after the opening animation, and Google Analytics only starts if the visitor accepts. Reels and the gallery link out to Instagram and Google Drive instead of loading inside the page, so the site stays light.

On smartphones

The next toast, right under your thumb.

Many people discover the events through an Instagram story and open the site on their phone. On a smartphone the next event fills the screen, “Add to calendar” sits right below it and the contact button stays in the bottom right-hand corner.
